Pink in Texas

Apologies for the infrequent posting, and briefness of this one, but a short update to point any readers to some online coverage of the in-progress "Behind the Pink Curtain" pink film retrospective currently underway at Austin's Fantastic Fest, held at the Alamo Drafthouse South Lamar.

Monday's show of Blue Film Woman was terrific—a great, enthusiastic crowd showed up despite some heavy-hitting competition in other cinemas. The print was gorgeous, in fact the first time it had been run through a projector. Check out a review on Twitch here.

Last night's Gushing Prayer: A 15-Year-Old Prostitute from incendiary director Masao Adachi was a more difficult title, kind of like a PhD course to Blue Film Woman's pink film 101. But those who appreciated the film's tone and hypnotic quality enjoyed it, and posed some good questions at the Q&A. Twitch's Rodney Perkins weighs in with a mixed review here.

Yesterday the fellows from LA-based Pink Eiga also showed up in Texas, in time for tonight's double-feature of two of their inaugural titles, due out on DVD next month: the lyrical if ludicrous A Lonely Cow Weeps at Dawn and the jaw-dropping, highly politically incorrect S&M Hunter. Can't wait to see how those two come off with the crowds!

Jasper Sharp's amazing book on the subject was also debuted this week, and is selling well. It's available from FAB Press and other online retailers. Jasper has also been doing great introductions to the films this week, including post-film Q&A's. Look for them online soon at the Fantastic Fest site.
